What is Cinnamon?

Cinnamon is a popular spice made from the inner bark of various fragrant spice plants belonging to the Genus Cinnamomum. The word Cinnamomum literally means a plant with warm, spicy flavor and a sweet scent. Some types of cinnamon are also known as Cassia.

During the cultivation stage, the bark of the tree is peeled off. Then the inner bark is carefully removed, rolled into rolls, and dried to create cinnamon sticks.

Cinnamon is used in teas, curries, desserts, and medicines. It contains antioxidants, improves the taste of both savory and sweet foods, helps with digestion, and regulates blood sugar.

How is Cinnamon cultivated?

Cinnamon grows best in hot, humid tropical climates. Loamy soil with good drainage and consistent rainfall is ideal for its growth. The cultivation starts from the plant seedlings or cuttings.

The trees are regularly pruned to encourage new growth. After two or three years, the stems become ready enough for the barks to be collected. In the final stage, the outer bark is removed in order to reach the interior layer.

The inner bark is carefully removed and kept to dry before being rolled into quills. For use in cooking and medicine, it is first dried and then processed into powder or cinnamon sticks.
