What is Nutmeg & Mace?

Nutmeg and mace come from the same tree, Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg is the dried seed kernel, whereas mace is the same nutmeg seed with a red, lacy covering.

Nutmeg is used in curries, desserts, and drinks due to its sweet, toasted flavor. And mace complements savory foods because of its mildly spicy flavor.

Both these spices are rich in essential oils, vitamins, and minerals. They have the potential to improve appetite, lessen discomfort, and aid in digestion. They have long been used in traditional medicine for their calming and restorative properties.

How is Nutmeg & Mace cultivated?

Mace and nutmeg trees are usually grown from seeds or grafted. Farmers select strong saplings so that the tree becomes strong enough to sustain itself for a few years. Young plants require shelter from the sun and wind during their early growth.

The trees are intercropped with coconut, arecanut, or clove to maximize land use. The trees need regular pruning to improve airflow and sunshine penetration. Regular trimming and proper airlight guarantees healthier production throughout the growing season.

Harvesting of nutmeg and mace is a year-round activity, but peak season is rainy months. Though it requires proper drying facilities and moisture control to keep away the damp conditions, fungal infections and deterioration of the quality of spices.
