What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a bright yellow spice that comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. Turmeric gives a very good colour to the cooking and also works as an antiseptic.

This spice has a warm, earthy, and faintly bitter flavor. It adds color and flavor to curries, soups, drinks and in various other recipes. Turmeric is also another natural dye that gives garments and food a golden tint.

How is Turmeric cultivated?

Turmeric does not come from any seeds, but rather from strong rhizomes. First the rhizome portions are selected with disease-free buds for planting. Then it is planted in a loose soil bed in rows and covered with soil. It requires warm temperatures and lots of rain. The crop is usually planted at the beginning of the monsoon season.

The ground that is necessary for turmeric should be well plowed and fertilized with organic manure prior to planting. Turmeric plants timely watering in regular intervals but the water should not stand in the soil to prevent rhizome deterioration.

It also needs regular weeding and mulching to keep plants safe, healthy and retain moisture. These rhizomes take a longer time of about a year to be grown fully and after ten to twelve months can be harvested.
